The favourite Brrrrrrrrrrrrrr to drink

Hypothesis:
Coca Cola (Coke), rather than Diet Coke (DC) or Vanilla coke (VC) is the favourite drink of primary school children.

Observations and Background Knowledge:
  • Many friends say Coke is their favourite.
  • A lot of adults drink Coke regularly.
  • When you buy drinks from the fridge at the shops often there is not much Coke left or it is sold out compared to other drinks.
  • Supermarket shelves have a lot of space for Coke, rather than other drinks. Coke is the standard drink at McDonalds, and they have a lot more Coke dispensors than the other drinks

Question:
Is Coke really the favourite? Can people pick their favourite type of coke based on taste?
Experiment:
A blinded taste testing experiment to see which coke is the favourite taste of primary students. Compare what children think is their favourite with what they choose is their favourite.

Equipment:
  • 1 bottle of Coke, 1 of Diet coke and 1 of Vanilla coke
  • Water
  • plastic cups, enough for 4 cups per person tasting
  • 3 tables
  • Students to taste
  • pen and paper to record the results

Hypothesis:
Coca Cola (Coke), rather than Diet Coke (DC) or Vanilla coke (VC) is the favourite drink of primary school children

Procedure:

  1. Set up 3 tables with plastic cups
  2. Pour a small amount of drink into each cup, 1 type of drink per table
  3. Label tables, A (Diet coke), B (Coca cola) and C (Vanilla coke)
  4. Hide bottles so the tasters cannot identify the drinks
  5. Fill some more cups with water only
  6. Collect participants from class
  7. Explain to participants what they are going to do:
    1. First drink the drink on table A
    2. Then drink some water to clean out the taste
    3. Second drink the drink on table B
    4. Then drink somewater to clean out the taste
    5. Third drink the drink on table C
    6. Participants then move to the table that they liked most based on taste
  8. Record the results of what is the favourite taste
  9. Then ask all participants "out of Coke, Diet coke and Vanilla coke which is their favourite?"
  10. Record these results
  11. Compare whether they chose the same drink based on taste compared to known preferenc

Our Group Roles:

  • Mollie: Set up tables and drinks, collect children from class, explain what participants are to do
  • Rayeema: Set up tables and drinks, help collect results, hide bottles of coke
  • Natasha: Set up tables and drinks, collect children from class, ensure tables are clean and rubbish is in the bin
  • Luke: Help design experiment and methods and analyse results (absent on experiment day)

Results:
Presentation1.jpg

Analysis:

From our results our group believes tha Vanila coke is more popular than Coca cola and Diet coke. We aso saw that those people who preferred Vanilla coke were able to chose Vanilla coke correctly after the tasting. Our group thinks that this is because Vanilla coke tastes very different from the other two types of coke. Interestingly enough, no participant who chose either Diet coke or Coca cola was able to correcty choose their preferred flavour after tasting. We believe this is because Diet coke and Coca cola tast very similar

Further Investigations:
In future experiments our group woud like to choose different flavours that are very similar. For example we could keep Diet coke and Coca cola and remove Vanilla coke. In its place we could add a similar tasting coke such as Coke Zero
